Bessans, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2022

Now my trip went south about 60 km to another municipal campsite Camping Municipal Illaz, beautifully located but somewhat secluded with 2.5 km to the town of Bessan, but close to the climb to the Col de L'Iseran, the highest pass in Europe with its 2770 m. and several other exciting mountains.

My trip a few days ago to Tignes from Bourg-Saint-Maurice should actually have gone to Val d'Isere and on to the top of the Col de L'Iseran, but I didn't feel like driving through the tunnel from Tignes to Val d' Isere, so I returned to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. But now I had the chance to drive up both sides without having to go through some tunnels. Both climbs are fantastic, you really feel like you are driving on the roof of the mountains. Despite its longer length, 16 km versus 13 km, the Val d'Isere side feels a little easier.

The next day offered a new mountain for me, Bellecombe Plan de Lac, which from now on is called the fly mountain. A super climb of about 13 km and 7.3% up to a lake. I've probably never been closer to turning around on the way up a climb, it would have to be when 3 wild dogs in Gran Canaria chased me up Pico de las Nieves, back to this story, I was enveloped in a swarm of flies , the first 7 km up the mountain, if I opened my mouth I swallowed a few pieces and when I slapped myself on the back of my hand I hit 3-4 pieces. Fortunately, there was a small descent of 400 meters where I could drive away from them.

On my last day, I had to drive in Napoleon's footsteps. On the border between France and Italy between the Maurienne valley and the Susa valley, Napoleon built a road over the mountain Col du Mont Cenis, an absolutely fantastic road where at the top you will find the special church Chiesa del Colle del Moncenisio and the lake Lac du Mont Cenis. On this trip and the trip to the fly mountain, you pass through the absolutely wonderful town of Lanslevillard, which is located at the foot of the Col du Mont Cenis.

Almost forgot about the fake mountain. On the trip from Bessans to Lanslevillard you come across a small climb called Col de la Madeleine, which cannot in any way be compared to its namesake from my 5th stop at Brides-les-Baines.
