Black Forest is a beautiful mountain range in the south of Germany. Feldberg is the highest mountain with it's 1493 meter. Black Forest is perfect for climbing some beautiful and challenging mountains on a road bike. For me the North part was like a magic fairytale with trolls and fairies and the climb to Hornisgrinde is a must do. I have done it from 3 different directions, they all end up at Mummelsee a beautiful mountain lake, from here you have 1.5 km. on a road that are closed for cars, to the top. All 3 rides are very challenging, with steep segments.
In the middle of the Black Forest, you have Kandel, a Mountain that are used by paragliders. You can sit and watch the paragliders takeoff, while enjoying a beer on the terrace of the restaurant. You can go from Waldkirch or Glottertal to the top, I prefer the route from Glottertal. But you can do the loop in both directions.
I started by driving from Waldkirch, where I stayed at a motorhome pitch, that was beautifully located behind a large park, but when I got to the top, I had forgotten my mobile, which is also my wallet and camera, so I had to go down again to get it. I then chose to ride the climb from Glottertal.
In the south of the Black Forest you have a little town called Münstertal with a great camping, from here you can climb Feldberg, Belchen, Sirnitzpass, Wieder Eck and Schauinsland. Schauinsland from Münstertal have some serious double digits slope percentages and on the top you only have the nice views, so remember to bring liquids and carbohydrates. If you drive down to Freiburg you will find places where you can eat and the climb from Freiburg to Schauinsland is much easier.
