From Bessans to Briançon it is about 100 km. The road goes through the Frejus tunnel for a distance of approx. 19 km. and now hold on, the price to drive through this tunnel is 63.5 eur when coming from France and 1 eur more from Italy. When you are here, you can be happy to be in a city that exudes TDF history, at least 45 times the tour has been the start or finish city, all the big names from the old days have won here, Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Louison Bobet, Charly Gaul, Federico Bahamontes, Eddie Merckx and Bernard Hinault to name a few. In addition, you can buy the most delicious pizzas, which in many cases surpass those on the Italian side, and Vingegaard will no doubt find it difficult to forget Briançon after his great performance up the Col du Granon. I was probably 13 days late, but the mountain was still there and so were the remains of the tour. Let me say right away that this mountain has only been on the tour 2 times is a mystery to me, in my opinion it has what it takes to be a classic. It may only have about 9 hairpin turns, but that only makes it harder and hard it is with its approx. 11 km. and 9% on average slope and the worst kilometer is 11.3%. It is not only hard, it is also extremely beautiful and, not least, audience-friendly. Before I finished Briançon, I should also just try driving up to the Col du Galibier from this side, it's a long climb approx. 36 km. with approx. 3.8% on average, just as great an experience as from the better-known Valloire side, not least the last 9 km. from Col du Lautaret. Now all I needed was the absolutely wonderful circuit over the Col d'Izoard, (approx. 19 km. and 5.9 in average) to Guillestre and on to L'Argentière-la-Bessée, remember to take the small cycle road on the left at Maison du Roy.
