Approx. 76 km south of Briançon lies Jausiers in the Ubaye valley. Ubaye was a great surprise for me, the valley is one of the most beautiful if you like to cycle in mountains and like to be a bit alone, not because there aren't lots of other cyclists, but it's just not as overcrowded, as at any of the more well-known ski areas. Jausiers is an excellent starting point for earning the Brevet des 7 Cols. A diploma awarded to cyclists who have cycled up the following 7 climbs: Col de la Bonette; Col de la Cayolle; Saint Anne; Col d’Allos; Col de Vars; Col des Fillys; Col de Pontis, there is no requirement for how long it take you or from which side you want to drive the climbs, you just have to remember to stamp your map at the top of the climbs, the map is handed out at the tourist office. The two most famous climbs are Col de Vars and Col de la Bonette which is one of the highest mountains you can cycle up to on a regular road bike in Europe. However, it is not those the two climbs that I will remember, the two climbs that I think were absolutely fantastic were the col de Pontis, a short very steep climb, but with the most beautiful views of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon reservoir and then the 29 km. long Col de la Cayolle, but which only rises by approx. 4%. This ride has so much to offer like waterfalls and steep canyons. Unfortunately, there is no cafe or restaurant at the top. I don't usually take photos when I drive up and since I was hit by some terrible bad weather the way down, the photos from the trip are limited.
Col de la Cayolle
The trip to the Col de Vars also offered a fantastic surprise, the town of Maljasset, if you don't have the strength to drive both the Col de Vars and Maljasset, choose Maljasset.
