114 km. north of Susa lies the city of Locana. this is a really good starting point if you want to drive up to Colle del Nivolet, a mountain I have dreamed of driving up for many years and let me say right away I was not disappointed. When I first heard about Colle del Nivolet, it was completely unknown and a bit problematic to drive because of a tunnel, but now in honor of the Giro de Italia, which was here in 2019, a road has been made only for bikes so you don't have to go through the tunnel and as if the rest of the road isn't great, this addition is just exceptional. Colle del Nivolet is located in the national park Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso and if there is a paradise, it must look like this, if you ask me. The campsite in Locana was old and worn, but it was perfectly located for the 40 km climb of approx. 4.8% up to Colle del Nivolet and the girls in charge of the campsite were very nice.
There aren't that many climbs in this area, but I found one more that I rode the next day. Lago di Teleccio I could see on the profile that it would be hard but that it is fantastically beautiful came as a surprise, and then it had another plus, no traffic and absolute silence. If you just look at the length approx. 12 km. and an average gradient of about 9.8 doesn't look too bad, but if you look a little closer at the profile, you will see that there is one kilometer with an average of 13.7% and that the last 5 km. is at 12.3%.
