Cap de formentor, Mallorca

Mallorca is one of Spain's many stunning islands. Mallorca has been loved by the Danes way back in the 60s, then mostly for the beach and pig parties, but in the 80s/90s something else started to happen, whether it had something to do with the professional cycling race Vuelta a Mallorca, Denmark's good cycling achievements , the general wave of exercise or something entirely else, I don't know, but more and more people replaced the pig feast with a nice bike ride on this beautiful island.

Bicycle tourism today accounts for approx. 12% of total tourism on the island. May and October are the busiest months for cycling tourism, so perhaps you should avoid these months.

It is not surprising that Mallorca is so popular among cycling tourists, there is plenty of sun in both spring and autumn and there are plenty of challenges in the form of mountains. In addition, cyclists are given a lot of consideration by motorists.

If you need a day without a bike or have a mountain bike, you have to drive up to the restaurant Es Verger, which is known for their absolutely fantastic lamb shoulder, the place is nick named the lamb shoulder mountain for the same reason.

Mallorca for masters, road cycling, cykel, race, event

From January 20 to January 22 in 2024, the Vuelta a Mallorca, now called Challenge-Mallorca, will be run for women and from January 24 to January 28 for men. At the end of April, the annual exercise cycling race Mallorca 312 is held and the annual cycling week in Mallorca takes place in October, and so does the annual master stage cycling race Tour of Majorca for Masters. Click on the link to see the exciting routes.

I was here myself for the first time on a bike in 2007 with the Firemen's cycling club, a fantastic trip where we lived in the south/west of Mallorca close to Palma in Cala Major. From here we did some fantastic rides and competed in a time trial up the soldier hill.

I think that Mr. Majorca tour guide Tom Nielsen, who I have heard rumors of should have become world champion in road cycling for firefighters, had organized the tours. By the way, Tom is still a cycling guide at the age of almost 78 and in fantastic shape.

Mallorca cycling roadbike cykel ferie vacation

The next time I was here was in 2011 with another Nielsen, Torben, a good friend and former Danish road cycling champion in H60. A man who doesn't need a GPS when he cycles in Mallorca. This time we stayed in the northern part of Mallorca in the town of Port de Pollença, where Torben had laid out 6 fantastic routes. If you live in this area you must not miss the trip to Cap de Formentor, the condition of the road is not the best, but you get 2 fantastic viewpoints, the last one with the opportunity to eat and drink with wild goats.

You should also try Sa Calobra if you are not in great shape, so take a more direct route than ours, be prepared that there are many tourists, both by car, bus and by bike.

I can also recommend Randa and Sant Salvador, but they are better located if you live in the southern part of Mallorca, from Palma you can make a 130 km route and visit both.
